In what has become one of the most fun pregame traditions in college sports, K-State fans jump out of their seats to clap, bend, and twist their bodies to the sounds of “The Wabash Cannonball.” It all started with an unfortunate incident in 1968 when the KSU department of music burned down, destroying every piece of music except “The Wabash Cannonball” that was in the band director’s briefcase. With a basketball game coming up, that left the K-State band to play the tune so much that it essentially turned into a second fight song and a tradition that would become a huge part of the KSU game day experience.
